How can I repair a stone fireplace?

Repairing limestone fireplaces

Limestone is brittle, so it is easily damaged. However, it is usually possible to repair cracks or chips.

What you will need
  • A small offcut of limestone

  • White marble filler

  • Sandpaper

What to do
  • Grind down the offcut of limestone

  • Mix the limestone dust into the white marble filler

  • Apply the filler to the crack or chip, so it stands proud of the surface

  • Allow to dry

  • Sand down the filler until it is flush with the stone surface

  • It is advisable to reseal the stone after repair
